Unpacking a Trigger
FROM TRIGGER, TO ORIGIN, TO CLARITY
Sometimes something small happens, and suddenly it feels like something much bigger. A comment. A look. A disagreement. Someone not showing up how you hoped they would.
You feel yourself become defensive, overwhelmed, angry, rejected or hurt — and afterwards you wonder why did that affect me so much? A trigger can be an invitation to pause and listen a little more closely.
Unpack Your Triggers is a guided reflection booklet created to help you move beneath the surface of your reactions and gently explore what might be happening underneath. Rather than trying to fix, suppress or judge your response, you'll be guided through a process of curiosity: What happened? What am I feeling? What did this make me believe? What does this feeling remind me of? Where might this pattern have begun? What did I need then?
What do I need now?
At the end of the booklet, you'll find the 18 schemas from Schema Therapy — these can be helpful as another lens through which you can look at your experience. You might begin to recognise an old pattern: I have to keep everyone happy. I'm going to be rejected. My needs don't matter. I'm not enough. I can't rely on people.
And then comes the most important part: coming back to yourself. Throughout the process, you'll be invited to connect with your deeper Self — the healthy, grounded adult part of you that can hold what you're feeling with compassion and perspective. From here, you can begin to ask what does the wisest part of me know? What do I actually need? What would I choose if I wasn't responding from an old pattern? How can I meet this moment differently?
The goal isn't to become someone who never gets triggered. It's to become someone who can notice the trigger, understand it, care for what lies underneath it, and choose what comes next.
Unpacking one trigger might take an hour or two in one sitting. Or it might unfold slowly — over hours, days, weeks, months or even years. You may understand something differently when you return to it six months from now. That's part of the process. This is why Unpack Your Triggers is designed to be printable and reusable. When something comes up, you can print a fresh copy and walk yourself through the same process again.
A place to pause.
A place to listen.
A place to understand yourself.
And, ultimately, a way to keep finding your way back to you.
The Inner Letter
Less fixing. More returning to yourself.
